MTV EMAs Pay Tribute to Liam Payne as Taylor Swift, Tyla and Sabrina Carpenter Triumph

Taylor Swift, Tyla, and Sabrina Carpenter were the big winners at the 2024 MTV EMAs, with emotional tributes to Liam Payne and unforgettable performances.

The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) saw major wins from Taylor Swift, Tyla, and Sabrina Carpenter, while the show also honored the late Liam Payne with a heartfelt tribute, nearly a month after his tragic passing in Argentina.

Tribute to Liam Payne

Host Rita Ora took a moment to remember Liam Payne, who was deeply loved by the MTV community. “He had the biggest heart and was always the first person to offer help,” Ora said, visibly emotional. “He brought so much joy to every room he walked into, and he left such a mark on this world.” A video tribute followed in honor of the late One Direction star, reminding viewers of his immense contribution to both music and the MTV family.

Taylor Swift Dominates with Multiple Wins

Although she wasn't present at the event in Manchester, Taylor Swift dominated the night, winning four prestigious awards: Best Artist, Best Live Act, Best U.S. Act, and Best Video for her hit "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone. In her video acceptance speech, Swift thanked Malone, saying, "Thank you so much to Post Malone for being the most amazing co-star possible."

Tyla's Big Night

Tyla made a remarkable impact, winning three awards for Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act. The South African artist also delivered a stunning performance, bringing energy to the stage with her medley of “Push 2 Start” and “Water.” “I’m so honored to be winning this award,” Tyla said, acknowledging the influence of Afrobeats on the global music scene.

Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande Take Home Awards

Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande both won big, though they were absent from the event. Carpenter claimed Best Song for “Espresso,” while Grande took home Best Pop. Despite being nominated, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX left empty-handed.

Busta Rhymes: Global Icon Award

Busta Rhymes was awarded the prestigious Global Icon Award, a honor previously given to legends like Queen and U2. In his emotional acceptance speech, Rhymes expressed his gratitude, stating, "Thirty-four years of professionally recording, this is the first time I’m getting an award from MTV, and it feels incredible."

Other Notable Performances

The night was filled with incredible performances, including Shawn Mendes’ “Heart of Gold” and Mexican band The Warning’s pyrotechnic display during their performance of “Automatic Sun.” LE SSERAFIM made their UK live debut, energizing the crowd with their hit songs “Chasing Lightning” and “CRAZY.”

Honoring Manchester’s Music Legacy

In addition to the musical awards, the show also paid homage to Manchester's rich music history, featuring playful references to iconic acts such as New Order and Happy Mondays. The event marked the 30th anniversary of the EMAs, which first took place in Berlin in 1994.

Pet Shop Boys Close the Show

To close the show, the Pet Shop Boys teamed up with the Manchester Camerata orchestra for a touching rendition of David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes,” followed by their iconic hit “West End Girls.”

The 2024 MTV EMAs celebrated both music and legacy, offering a powerful night of performances, heartfelt tributes, and unforgettable wins.
